~ All About Me ~
For as long as I can remember I always wanted to be a teacher. Here I am beginning my thirtieth year of teaching!
I started my career teaching first grade in a catholic school while working on my masters degree in special education. After three years teaching first grade I decided to gain experience in special education as a substitute teacher in Warwick. At the end of my second year, my husband and I decided to start a family. I was fortunate enough to stay at home to raise my daughter and a few years later my son.
When my son started first grade it was time for me to restart my teaching career. Warwick hired me as a special education teacher at Wickes Elementary. I taught at Wickes for eleven years.
When this second grade position became available at the Job Fair for the 2004-2005 school year, I knew it was for me and I have been here ever since.
The district has had several initiatives throughout the years and I was asked to be a part of some of them. Most recently I was on the second grade team responsible for aligning the Math and the English Language Arts curriculum to the Common Core State Standards. Our ELA team also developed standard-based assessments.
PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is also a district-wide initiative. I was the coach for the team of teachers and support staff here at Lippitt for a number of years.
Last year I was honored by being named Warwick's Teacher of the Year. This recognition validates the commitment I have toward educating the children of Warwick but I also believe that I am just one of the many Teachers of the Year in Warwick.
Personally, I am a wife, mother of two, mother-in-law, and grandmother. Grady, my grandson, has brought so much joy to our family. Of course I have to say he is adorable and smart. How many three year olds recite and recognize the letters of the alphabet and can count to twenty? Grandmothers do have bragging rights.
Finally, I have to say that I am proud to be entrusted with the education of your children. You and I are a team in this second grade journey. Our combined efforts will lead your children to success.
I will close with a quote by William Butler Yeats that I believe expresses my philosophy about education, "Education is not about the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire."
